His condition includes joining the Triathlon at Camp Pendleton which is a 500 yard swim, a 5 kilometer run and a 30 kilometer bike to the finish. Competing in the 20 -24 age bracket Ortiz finished the triathlon at 9th place with a time 1 hour and 366 minutes beating out 1000 other competitors in the process.

His overtraining might lead to serious threats in his career. The very least would be an injury before the fight such as a broken bone or rolled ankle that could seriously cause him the fight. We can all hope and see how the training pays of when Mayweather vs Ortiz dubbed as “Star Power” come this September 17. We’ll find out if Ortiz’s overtraining and his gamble pays of as well.

By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum isn’t impressed with what he sees of his number #1 fighter Manny Pacquiao after traveling to the Philippines and watching how listless Pacquiao looked during his training session. After briefly trying to put a positive spin on it, Arum came out with this today in an article at Philstar.com: “What I watched Manny on Saturday, I didn’t see the kind of speed that he would need to beat Margarito. If the fight happened on Saturday Margarito would win the fight.” I totally agree with Arum.

I’ve seen some of the video of Pacquiao’s training and sparring sessions and he looks like a little slow tank moving around the ring landing but getting hit a lot in return by his sparring partners. Pacquiao looks really slow and heavy at this weight and I don’t see the advantage for him. He was much better fighting at a lighter weight, but he looks slow now that he’s almost 150. I think whatever advantage Pacquiao had in the past over his opponents, it’s now gone that he’s beefed up through his six meals a day.
If I was his trainer Freddie Roach, I’d back off immediately with the meals and get him on the track with Alex Ariza and work on trimming off some of that useless muscle that seems to be slowing him down. Pacquiao could probably beat Margarito weighing only 140 or less. He doesn’t need all the extra weight. I think that is a bad idea for him. Pacquiao looks utterly hittable at this weight. We already saw how easy it is to hit Pacquiao in his last fight against Joshua Clottey. If Clottey had the sense enough to realize that he could win the fight if he had thrown a few more punches, he would have beaten Pacquiao to a pulp.

Instead, Clottey only threw a few punches every round and looked to be conserving his energy. Margarito won’t be fighting like that. He’s going to be fighting all out throwing 100 punches per round. Pacquiao, the way he looks like right now, can’t match that rate, at least he can’t match it with any kind of power. He looks too heavy and it’s going to be easy for Margarito to find him with his punches.

Arum says “It’s not my place to stand in between the trainer and the fighter. But he’s got to focus and stop all these nonsense. But if Freddie [Roach] needs my help, I’d be happy to do it.” Oh boy, that’s a shot across the bow. Roach is dropping the ball big time with his training for Pacquiao this time. If it was his idea for Pacquiao to beef up even further for this fight, I think he’s made a fatal miscalculation. Pacquiao looks like he can’t even move. He’s no longer jumping around because he’s too heavy. Pacquiao looks like a plodder. At this point, I think even Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander, Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan could beat Pacquiao.

"We are not giving too much attention to that," said Mike Koncz, narrating an incident when he informed his boss about Mayweather taking the top spot based on Yahoo's rankings. "When I told him that, he just stared at me," said Koncz. "He doesn't care what the others think because he knows who is truly the No. 1 fighter in the world." Yahoo had conducted a poll among boxing writers mainly from the US, Puerto Rico and Europe and the 33 surveyed, 20 picked Mayweather and 13 selected Pacquiao as their choices for No. 1. Mayweather's climb to No. 1 is due to his recent victory over Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, something that weighed more heavily among those polled compared to Pacquiao's win over Joshua Clottey last March in Dallas. Meanwhile, Koncz bared that Pacquiao, who has won a congressional seat in Sarangani, will be travelling to Manila anytime this coming week to attend to some personal matters. After a Christmas weekend filled with comments and reports related to the potential mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions have issued the following joint statement:

Let the record be clear: Manny Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum are threatening to walk away from the largest fight in history. The fact is that random blood and urine testing was one of the many deal points and was listed along with the others, such as the financial split, the weight, financial penalty for being overweight, the appointment of the foreign sales agent, the production of the marketing assets, the gloves and many more. Team Mayweather made major concessions in many of these areas and we were optimistic that Team Pacquiao would do the same as it related to the request for random blood and urine testing, which Floyd Mayweather agreed to immediately.

It is disappointing for us to see that the benefits of blood testing and the fact that many different substances and procedures can only be detected by blood testing, are still not fully understood by all.

Their “take it or leave it” approach where blood testing would stop 30 days prior to the fight unless the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) approved differently is another indication that they may not want this fight. Pacquiao’s position (and as stated on his website) is. “The truth is taking blood out of my body does not seem natural to me and mentally I feel it will weaken me if blood is taken from me just days before the fight” or he is “afraid of needles” and does not feel comfortable with blood being taken closer than 30 days before the fight is another interesting point. The fact is that he did have blood taken just 14 days prior to his fight with Ricky Hatton, an event which was documented on HBO’s 24/7 reality show.

Also when told that Pacquiao feels that the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) is an agent of Golden Boy Promotions-which is in and of itself a ridiculous accusation-we moved swiftly and made yet another concession by stating that we would be perfectly fine to retain another agency which would do the random urine and blood tests and jointly agree on a reasonable cutoff prior to the fight but which would still maintain the integrity of the results. Let it be clear that this procedure was declined by Pacquiao as was the proposal to bring in an independent mediator such as Sen. John McCain, a suggestion that was in fact embraced by Bob Arum, but also declined by Manny Pacquiao.

Let it be very clear that nobody from Team Mayweather or Golden Boy Promotions is accusing Pacquiao of anything. But the reality seems to be that for whatever reason Pacquiao does not want to participate in random blood testing, which has already been deemed a harmless procedure that many current athletes are subjected to prior to and during competition.

Team Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions is still open to the earlier discussions of having both parties work out a mutually agreeable understanding of the testing, which would be conducted by a mutually agreed upon agency.

In closing Floyd Mayweather is one of the most decorated athletes boxing has ever seen and he is anxious to make this fight happen for all of the fans and sports enthusiasts that are asking for this fight to happen too. As you might have noticed Floyd has been silently watching and patiently waiting for the final details of the fight to get worked out. As Floyd has already stated he does not have a problem with the random procedure and will be under the same requirements as Pacquiao, it is simply hard for him to understand why there is reluctance on Pacquiao’s part to agree to do the same.

The Canadian adviser of Manny Pacquiao said on Monday that “Floyd Mayweather simply has to go to church regularly to know where the Filipino’s vaunted strength and power come from.” Reacting to a statement made by Mayweather’s handlers that Pacquiao should undergo an Olympic-Style drug testing in the weeks leading to their March 13, 2010 fight, Mike Koncz said he welcomes Leonard Ellerbe’s demand that such tests be done to ensure that the two fighters are clean when they finally collide. “It’s amusing,” said Koncz from General Santos City, home of Pacquiao. “There’s no problem with that but if he wants to get an answer right away, he better visit the church so he’d know why.” Ellerbe is one of two key Mayweather advisers. The other is Al Haymon. Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions are in the final stages of finalizing the Pacquiao-Mayweather bout that is expected to break box-office and PPV records.

Manny Pacquiao stopped the flow of traffic late Saturday afternoon on Vine Street in Hollywood as he was about to honor a commitment with Nike. Pacquiao had just wound up his training at the Wild Card Boxing Club as he is revving up for next week’s big fight with Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico in Las Vegas when the crowd started to swell. Members of the LAPD had to be called in to make sure Pacquiao gets out of the Wild Card premises in time for his appointment.

Pacquiao vs Cotto boxing fight is on November 14, 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. It is scheduled for 12 rounds.

From BoxingConfidential.com, Feb. 5, 2007: Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and his brother Bobby today went to a school in General Santos City to take a special exam that would allow them to get the equivalent of high school units of educational attainment.
Both Pacquiaos only finished elementary grades, they admit, due to extreme poverty when they were still growing up - a fact they have not forgotten now despite owning million dollar bank accounts from their boxing earnings.
At the Department of Education Testing Center, the fighting brothers took the High School Equivalency Test for six hours, a process Manny called “very, very tiring.” The brothers were administered exams in English, Filipino, Social Studies, Mathematics and Science.
“He was very determined to pass, just as he is very determined to win in his fights. He had read the questions very religiously, and answered them well,” said a Dept of Education official when interviewed by the media.
The examinations started at 1:00 PM and ended at 6:30 PM, a process described by Pacquiao as more tiring that his trilogy with Erik Morales.
Manny and his wife Jinky have three children.
